What is spray foam insulation

Spray foam insulation is a liquid polyurethane that is sprayed into walls, ceilings and rim joists, where it expands and hardens in place. Because it expands, it fills gaps and cracks that other materials leave open. It comes in two types: open-cell, which is lighter and better at sound dampening, and closed-cell, which is denser and adds an air and moisture barrier.

That air-sealing quality matters a lot in New England. Old colonials and capes around Greater Boston tend to leak air through hundreds of small gaps. Spray foam insulates and seals in a single step, which is why it usually delivers the biggest comfort change in older homes.

What is fiberglass insulation

Fiberglass insulation is made of fine glass fibers, sold as batts (pre-cut blankets) or as loose fill that gets blown into place. It is the most common insulation in American homes for a simple reason: it costs less upfront and installs quickly in open wall cavities and attics.

Fiberglass slows heat transfer well when it is installed correctly and kept dry. What it does not do is stop air movement. If your walls leak air, cold drafts will pass around and through fiberglass, and its real-world performance drops below what the label suggests.

Here is the honest comparison for our climate:

  • Air sealing. Spray foam seals as it insulates. Fiberglass needs separate air sealing work to perform at its best.
  • Insulating power per inch. Closed-cell spray foam delivers more insulating value in less space, useful in thin walls and rim joists. Fiberglass needs more depth to reach the same result.
  • Moisture. Closed-cell foam resists moisture and can protect basements and crawl spaces. Fiberglass loses performance when it gets damp.
  • Upfront cost. Fiberglass is the budget option. Spray foam costs more on day one and pays back over time through lower heating and cooling bills.
  • Retrofit fit. Blown-in options (including cellulose, a third material worth asking about) often make more sense for closed walls in older homes.

Neither material is “the best” in every case. A common approach we use on projects across Massachusetts and New Hampshire is a hybrid: spray foam where air sealing and moisture control matter most (rim joists, basements, attic hatches) and fiberglass or blown-in cellulose in large open areas where budget goes further.

How to decide: a 5-step checklist

  1. Identify the problem you are solving: drafts and cold rooms point to air leakage; even coldness everywhere points to low insulation depth.
  2. Check the areas that lose the most heat first: attic, rim joists and basement walls, in that order.
  3. Match the material to the space: closed-cell foam for damp or tight spaces, batts or blown-in for open attics and walls.
  4. Compare quotes on total performance, not just price per square foot. Ask how each proposal handles air sealing.
  5. Confirm the installer is licensed and insured, and ask what the work will look like at inspection time.

When each option is the right call

Choose spray foam when your home is drafty, when you are already opening walls during a remodel, when you are finishing a basement, or when you want the highest comfort gain and plan to stay in the house for years.

Choose fiberglass when the budget is tight, the cavities are open and accessible, and the house already has decent air sealing. It remains a solid, proven material when installed with care.
